The production industry – like most industries – was hit hard by the global coronavirus pandemic. During the first few weeks, production projects across the nation, ranging from big-budget motion pictures to live conferences, were coming to a complete and sudden halt. Timeframes for completion were morphing into tentative estimates, and no one was quite sure what the future would hold for production studios.
But once the smoke started to clear, it was evident that we needed to roll up our sleeves and come up with a solution. It was no easy feat! It meant transitioning to remote video production, hiring smaller crews, installing Pexiglass barriers, maintaining social distance, implementing sanitation protocols, and wearing PPE gear.
With the distribution of vaccines becoming more widely distributed, it raises the inevitable question – will video production return to normal? Like most questions that are raised around the pandemic, it’s difficult to give a concrete answer. No one can say for sure what the future will hold. But we do think that some changes are here to stay for the foreseeable future.
A New Normal
At the start of the pandemic, remote production was the answer to a problem. It allowed for a new workflow that was unique to the production industry. But is it possible for remote video production to remain in play long after the coronavirus pandemic ends?

There are some excellent benefits that come from producing content remotely. For example, most live conferences were either cancelled or postponed when the pandemic hit. But video conferences, live streams, and webinars have been invaluable this past year, and the budget for a webinar or live stream is usually a fraction of the cost of hosting an in-person conference. You could save on costs while still hosting an event that is engaging, visually entertaining and delivers results. It would make sense then that large companies and small businesses alike might seek to minimize budget spend and continue to hold virtual conferences and corporate meetings, even after the pandemic.
Remote Post-Production
Another area of video production that would likely remain changed is that of post-production. Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, technologies existed that allows crewmembers to edit and finalize projects in the post-production stage from an entirely remote setting. With these technologies continuing to advance, and the hiring pool expanding rapidly to remote editors, we can expect more remote opportunities for this aspect of video production for the foreseeable future.
